- The Mandate: The client required a new compliance-ready environment including a purpose-built server room, structured low-voltage cabling, secure network architecture, and managed physical access controls for rooms housing regulated medical equipment, with physical access treated as a regulated security control of equal weight to digital safeguards.
- The Stakes: Healthcare organizations operating medical equipment face HIPAA Security Rule physical safeguard requirements under 45 CFR § 164.310, mandating documented controls over physical access to systems and equipment that process or store electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI). A buildout without integrated physical and network controls would expose the practice to direct regulatory risk and force a far more expensive retrofit once the clinical environment was operational.
Netwolf’s Solution:
- Server Room and Cabling Architecture: Designed and constructed an on-premises server room and ran structured low-voltage cabling across the new space, establishing the physical foundation for segmented network architecture without compromising future scalability.
- Segmentation-First Network Architecture: Stood up the network with Zero Trust segmentation built in from day one, isolating clinical systems, medical devices, patient/guest Wi-Fi, and administrative traffic onto separate VLANs. This eliminated the flat-network lateral-movement paths attackers most commonly exploit, before the first endpoint ever connected.
- Managed Physical Access Controls: Deployed cloud-managed door access controls across all offices, with audit logging, role-based credentialing, and centralized administration. The result is a defensible, queryable physical access record that satisfies HIPAA documentation requirements and integrates with identity management for unified workflows.
